The Odyssey: An Epic Journey

Responsibilities:

Do you have your textbook, notebooks and materials needed to take notes? Have you done your homework or prepared yourself properly for your class? One of the main characteristics of a good hero is being responsible. Each of us has this power, why not demonstrate your powers as a heroic student by fulfilling your responsibilities.

Activity:

Guided Reading - Part 1 of the Odyssey

By now you should have read or watched the video about the story of Odysseus´ exploits. Here is a short test. Complete the PowerPoint presentation in your notebooks. You may use your notes, old tests, the internet and/or books. BUT YOU MUST DO SOMETHING!

Students who have trouble thinking up characteristics that heroes possess should do the following exercise first:

Homework: Bring a journal to next class -this is a small notebook. If you have an iPhone, you can get a free app on your phone that works as an excellent journal to add notes, stories, and pictures. Check out www.everlater.com to set up your account and simply search "free travel journal by everlater.com" on your iPhone, iPad or iPod to get started on your way.

Role Play:

COLD CASE: The Cask of the Amontillado

There is no doubt after reading the Poe's story that Montresor, the story's narrator, has won his revenge. Now it's up to you to determine if a crime has been committed and if so, who is the guilty party?

After some 50 years, the corpse of Fortunato was discovered behind a makeshift wall within the Montrsor family catacombs. On trial for the man's untimely death is Sr. Montresor himself; the owner the catacombs where the body was discovered. Last seen with Fortunato in the streets during Carnival nearly 5 decades ago, the magistrate (the local law enforcement) placed Montresor under arrest for believing that he murdered Fortunato. As of yet, Sr. Montresor has not made comment of the accusations directed upon him.

The above is a brief illustration of the drama you are facing today. An innocent or guilty man stands before the judge on charges of first degree murder. The punishment is certain death. The citizens of Barranquilla wait anxiously for the outcome of this sensational trial.

Step 1: Get into groups of 4
Step 2: Select a judge
Step 3: Judges dictate instructions to team.
Step 4: You have 10 minutes to prepare for your case (5 minutes to gather evidence / 5 minutes to prepare your lines
Step 5: Perform trial 10 minutes or less.

The rest of the class will act ass jurors. They will declare the final verdict over the accused and will assess the performance using a very basic rubric.

Together we will complete "The Most Dangerous Game" by creating a comic book version of the short story.

Here is the first page completed for you. You can use the same program I used -Comic Life, or any other that you prefer to continue the graphic version of this story. You can even post pictures including short dialogues on Facebook if that is more your style. The only real requirement is that you remain true to the story using your own words.
